Tucked away behind Nambung National Park, home of the mighty Pinnacles – eerie limestone structures formed around 30,000 years ago when the sea receded – you’ll find Nambung Station Stay.
We’re completely obsessed with this place.
It’s a 5000-acre working sheep and cattle farm and the light hits differently here. Drive past the hand-painted sign nailed to the front gate and be welcomed by alpha bulls with giant bobbing testicles, baby lambs trying to balance on long, spindly legs and the odd rogue emu trying to blend in with the scenery. With towering hay bales, green fields for days, and fresh country air to sear your nostrils with, it’s the perfect place to take a breather from city life.
Nambung Station Stay is a fab spot to pitch a tent or park your home on wheels. While you’re smooshed pretty close to your neighbours, you do get a series of other great bonuses – like a power outlet, piping hot showers, a blessed toilet, camp kitchen and a big ole communal firepit to make new mates around. There are even on-site caravans if you can’t face a flappy canvas for the night (these vans aren’t exactly five-star but do have a certain retro charm).
Little kids can feed farm animals and cruise around like King-Pins helping out with chores. But, hands down, the best part about staying at Nambung Station Stay is being able to book a Painted Desert tour with caretaker Paul. Get picked up in his buggy and race the emus to the property’s private “backdoor” entrance to Nambung National Park. The Pinnacles here are otherworldly, free from tourists, filled with Mad Max-esque desert dunes and barely touched ancient limestone formations. It’s the most eerie and magical 3km walk you’ll ever take.
Best bit: The Painted Desert Tour, offering an unforgettable back door entrance to the Pinnacles. You can’t reach this any other way except through Nambung Station Stay. Don’t miss it.
Worst bit: The toilet block is basically a no-frills donga. Prepare for a weak flush and to peg your nose while in there. Also get ready for a digital detox – you’ll barely get a signal here.
Suitable for kids? Yep, this station stay is the ultimate farm stay and adventure for kids. Best of all, it’s a quick two-hour drive so the perfect weekend escape.
